Nyx honestly loved everything about staying in a hotel.
And the school trip was great so far, really!
…except for the rule about students being separated into their hotel rooms by gender.
…and the fact that her three closest friends were all boys meant being separated from them. So that was a drawback.
And the fact that the three girls she was sharing a room with didn’t seem to like her much. That was another.
Those two things combined meant that when she woke up in a cold sweat –and apparently screaming, judging by the angry looks she received from her roommates- the only thing she could do was lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to will herself back to sleep.
…Jumping at every little sound, growing steadily more paranoid of the darkness around her, for some reason only able to think of worse and worse case scenarios. What if there’s a fire? What if the door lock melts and they get trapped the room? What if Grayson was right about them? What if it was a murderer? What if he was waiting for her to fall asleep? What if it was a vampire or something? What if it was Reyes’s dad?! What if…
….Okay, no, this wasn’t good at all.
S-stop it. She told herself. K-keep it together, Nyx. You know there’s nothing there. Something would have happened by now if there was, right?
Despite the words of her mental self-scolding, she wasn’t completely able to convince herself that it was completely safe. She chewed the inside of her lip as her gaze wandered the room, periodically returning to one particular spot in the far corner where it was the darkest, and it seemed entirely possible that it was concealing something horrible.
Okay, she couldn’t keep laying here alone in the dark. All she was doing was scaring herself. She had to talk to someone else.
…But waking up her roommates would probably just make them mad again.
…And being in a boys’ room wasn’t allowed after nine. She didn’t want to break the rules…
…at least at the school if this happened, she could go knock on the boys’ dormitory doors and one of her friends –usually Reyes- would come out and talk to her until she calmed down.
She ran through options in her head. Okay, what were the rules about leaving the room at night, again? Can’t be in a boys’ room after nine. Can’t be out of the room after ten…
…She felt certain there was an ‘unless’ that followed that. She ran though options in her mind, testing to see if they sounded right.
…Unless there was a fire? Maybe. That probably wasn’t it, though. That seemed too obvious. They probably wouldn’t have to make that a rule.
…Unless you were in the bathroom? No, wait, there were bathrooms in the rooms, duh.
…unless…
….unless what? She wracked her brain. What had professor Stewart said?
Wait, Professor Stewart! That was it, ‘unless there is something wrong and you need to talk to a teacher! Okay, perfect!
...Except that the teacher in charge of this hallway was professor Alliunde.
She forced herself to sit up and slip out of bed before she could think about it too hard. Professor Alliunde had merely come off as a bit odd initially. And then when he had cut his hand in front of her and Reyes, he had all but terrified both of them for a long time. And then he had scared Grayson. Or he hadn’t. She was still a bit confused about what had happened when her timid friend had stayed after transfiguration class, only to come bolting out of the room at full speed not five minutes later.
After that though, nothing else major had really happened. In fact, recently he seemed to have been trying to be especially nice to the four of them. She forced herself to focus on this thought as she padded as quietly as she could, bare-foot down the hallway in the direction of the teacher’s room.
She hesitated for a good minute when she actually got there, though, just staring up at the door in silence.
Come on, Nyx. She encouraged herself silently. You can do this. She swallowed a bit more noisily than she had meant to. I mean…he’s your teacher. And teachers have to care about their students, right? He’s not gonna…I mean, what’s the worst he’ll do? M…murder you? She hesitated over the word uncertainly. She hadn’t even realistically considered that before. She hadn’t even meant it seriously in her head, but now, here in the dimly-lit, kind of creepy hallway, she thought a little harder about it. He had cut himself. For no reason. And hadn’t Kelland said that probably meant that the professor was insane?
…and weren’t murderers usually insane?
She whimpered quietly and swallowed again.
N-no, don’t be ridiculous. Teachers don’t k….kill their students. H-he’s just…a little…different. He’s not…evil…or anything…
She stared at the door, eyes wide. …Probably. Another small whine escaped her as she glanced down the hall.
Okay, maybe I’ll go visit Reyes and Grayson and Kelland anyways. They’re just around the corner. In truth, they weren’t ‘just around the corner’. Their room was around two corners, and at the very end of that hall. She hesitated again as she stared in the direction she knew her friends to be in. ….Yep. She thought, gaze unwavering as she sized up the hallway. Just down the hall...that way...
…In the dark.
…Alone.
She shook her head, blowing air into one cheek stubbornly.
No, bad Nyx! You’re not scared of a hallway. What would your friends say? You can do this. There’s nothing there. It’s just a hallway.
With that, she turned a sharp ninety degrees, but hesitated again before going anywhere.
…Just a hallway. She repeated forcefully. …A long…narrow…dark…creepy…hallway… Her thought was finished with significantly less gusto. She whimpered again, unsure what to do.
She really didn’t want to be out here anymore. She couldn’t just go back to her room, though. She’d be in exactly the same predicament as before!
Okay, as long as I don’t think about it, I should be fine. It’s just a hallway.
And that was the unfortunately-timed moment that the building decided to creak against the wind outside. But to Nyx, it sounded like someone –or something coming straight for her right around the corner!
“P-PROFESSOR!” She yelled, terrified and certainly loud enough to wake up everyone around them and maybe most people on this floor as she pounded against the door with a frantic urgency. “PROFESSOR ALLIUNDE!” She stopped yelling, but continued her knocking until the door was swung open away from her.
Nyx took a step back, eyes wide. She had apparently never fully registered exactly how tall he was. The teacher seemed to loom over her, the poor lighting doing nothing to make him appear any less imposing as he growled
“WHAT.”
Another small whimper escaped her throat without permission, but no other sound came out. Why had this seemed like such a good idea?
There was a tense moment of silence before Professor Alliunde let out a sigh, posture seeming to relax a bit. “What is it, Nyx?” he asked, calmer now, though it sounded a bit forced.
Nyx tried to speak, but all that came out for a while was “…nnn…” before she forced another swallow, finally getting her voice back.
“I-I…w-well, I- IhadabaddreamandIcouldn’tsleepinmyroomandIcan’tgoseemyfriendsandyourroomwastheclosestandI just thought that…” She began uncertainly, but let everything out in a long, breathless rant before she could let herself think about it, her words slowing back down towards the end, eventually trailing off as her brain caught up with her mouth and she ran out of breath at roughly the same time.
“…Seriously?” The teacher said flatly after a silence that was long enough for Nyx to wonder once again if this was such a good idea, and then let herself get slightly distracted with how different Professor Alliunde looked at night. His ears weren’t pointed, and his ebony hair lacked the influence of any particular color –even the surprisingly pale violet of his bedclothes.
Nyx tried not to flinch as he spoke again, his accented voice low, a slightly malevolent tone to it. “Do you even realise what time it is?!” The fact that his teeth were -for some reason- sharp, despite the rest of his charms being gone, only made him look more intimidating. Did she look that scary when she was mad? She hoped not.
“…nn…” She started, resisting the urge to take another step back. Or blush. Or cry. Embarrassment was beginning to creep up on her along with the fear. The silence that followed the teacher’s remark was long enough for her to notice the natural color of his eyes (pale green) and to register the fact that he was still wearing gloves. Did he really wear them to bed? Why? It brought her mind back to the fact that he was a bit odd, which led her back to the ‘evil’ train of thought. She didn’t take her eyes off his face though, surprising even herself, although she was considering just making a run for it back to her room as he continued to hold his really annoyed stare. Another whimper made its way out of her throat, almost silent this time, and the broken silence finally triggered movement.
He sighed deeply, shifting his weight as he stepped to the side, holding the door open.
“…Fine.” He rolled his eyes and Nyx blinked, not entirely sure what was going on as he gestured her inside the room. “If you tell anyone, I’ll deny it.” He warned as she obediently entered. She glanced around worried, but almost hopeful while he closed the door behind her. “Also you’re taking the couch.” She turned to face him now as he was starting towards her, further into the room.
“…Um…” She murmured softly. “…W…what…?” Professor Alliunde stared at her for a moment.
“I assume you wanted to stay with someone tonight, but as you said, you can’t go see your friends, so you came here. Am I wrong?”
Nyx hesitated for a moment before shaking her head, forcing back a smile as she finally clued in to what was happening.
“Good.” He sighed, starting towards the bed as she made her way to the small loveseat in the corner and sat down, eventually moving to curl up on her side. “Good night, Nyx.” He said once he was in his bed.
“…Good night, Professor.” She answered quietly. She lay there in silence, now letting her smile show, glad that perhaps she had been right about the professor. He wasn’t evil; he was just a bit different. Just like her and her friends. She stayed awake for what seemed like a long time. Long enough that she was sure that Argentille had gone to sleep before she drifted off.
There was a blanket around her that hadn’t been there before when she woke up, though.
